My favourite day all week was spent doing a historical tour, followed by elephant trekking and bamboo rafting. We went to the Bridge over the River Kwae, a World War II museum & a WWII Commonwealth cemetary, where thousands of POWs lay buried. Over 10,000 Allied Prisoners of War died building the bridge and subsequent railway that linked Thailand and Burma for the occupying Japanese. After living in Flanders, Belgium for a year I became accustom to seeing this Cross of Sacrifice as it stands in every Commonwealth cemetary there, but this was my first visit to a similar cemetary in Asia. I was surprised to find the very same momument half way around the world! As Canadians, we learn so little about the Asia-Pacific part in WWII and so I am fascinated to learn about and see how it fits into my previous knowledge.
