Survivor: Situ Gunung style

86 7th grade students
+ 8 teachers
+ 7 trained Outward Bound guides
+ 5 days of super challenging activities
= SO MUCH FUN!!
I spent last week supervising and participating in a week of survival camping with 86 7th Grade students from my school. Considering most these students are from very priveledged families (nannies, drivers, fancy homes, etc.) they managed to survive sleeping in tents, bathing with no hot water, cooking their meals, doing the dishes; not to mention participating in physical challenges like high ropes, abseiling, raft building, orienteering, rice planting and spending one night with a strange family in a poor rural village. Most of them did pretty well and even learned to enjoy themselves. I LOVED it.
Many of these 7th grade students had never before slept with the light off, washed a single dish or done very much by themselves. I think that is partly what made the camping trip so interesting and incredible to see that these kids could actually do it. They survived!
