Bulan Bahasa celebrations

Literally translated, Bulan Bahasa means language month, but it is really a few weeks set aside each year to focus on Indonesian culture. These are 3 of my former students performing the traditional Balinese dance. They were awesome!

Traditional Indonesian outfits are so colourful and unique. I unfortunately couldn't find the proper top for my kebaya. The lacy tops were either very small or huge, so I had to settle for just buying a beautiful skirt. Here I am with students who I taught during the past two years in Grade 6. The students on the right are my current 7th graders, while the ones on the left I pass in the hallway everyday, but I don't teach any longer.

This is Liz, my new friend and colleague up in Middle School. She is from Chicago area and is friend's with my former housemates in Mexico (Lizzie Greene). It was pretty incredible how God worked to bring her here and she is a great addition to the Middle School team and the singles group here in Karawaci. It has been such a blessing to have a good friend just down the hall who is struggling just like me to figure it all out. You rock Liz!

We were all asked to wear traditional outfits to school for the whole day, even though the assembly wasn't until after lunch. Each homeroom one J-Co donuts if they had 100% participation, so we definitely had some incentive to show our Indonesian spirit. The thing that made me laugh, was this particular Friday happened to be the day that my 7.5 class was doing a simulation activity about the barbarian tribes invading the Roman Empire. It was pretty funny watching these elegantly dressed girls acting out the parts of barbarians:)
